Titus Corlatean A historical decision was made 94 years ago, on March the 27th 1918; at a time of confusing events, in the aftermath of WWl, the Country Council of the historical province of Bessarabia decided to break away with Russia and unite with Romania paving the way for the full unity of the Romanian state, completed on December the 1st 1918.

After the unification, Bessarabia remained part of Romania for more than 20 years, upon which was unconditionally ceded to the former USSR, under the Ribbentrop – Molotov secret pact. But in spite of massive sovietization, the Romanians in the former Socialist Soviet Republic of Moldova managed to keep their national identity.

After 1991, when the Republic of Moldova proclaimed its independence, that process has become part of the state policy. State secretary Eugen Tomac, head of the Romanian Government Department for the Romanians Everywhere, said in a special address that the emotional significance of that historical moment of unification had not dwindled with the passing of time. The efforts, commitment and courage of those who made possible the accomplishment of an ideal of the Romanians everywhere, is an example of determination and national dignity.

In turn, Nicolae Timofti, president elect of the Republic of Moldova, mentioned among the top priorities of his mandate, European integration and as good a relationship with neighboring Romania as possible. A resolution adopted in Chishinau also highlights the support the Moldovan MPs are enjoying from their Romanian counterparts in terms of Moldova’s EU accession. Romanian MP Titus Corlatean, co-president of the joint Parliamentary Committee for European integration.

Titus Corlatean: “We, as an EU member state, can provide our expertise ,our experience during Romania’s EU accession negotiations, and also political support in the relation with Parliaments from other EU member states.”

We’ll wait and see when the aspiration of the Republic of Moldova regarding its EU membership will become a fact so that it may join Romania in this solid framework of European unity.
