Hundreds of gendarmes, policemen, anti-organized crime and customs agents backed by 4 helicopters on Thursday staged the biggest operation meant to combat organized crime held so far in Romania. The police searched tens of locations and arrested a large number of people in 5 counties. The operation targeted members of a group suspected of stealing building equipment abroad which was then sold or rented in Romania. Judicial bodies from France, Belgium and Italy also collaborated in the operation.
The governor of the National Bank of Romania, Mugur Isarescu, has been included in the World Records Academy as the longest standing governor of a central bank in the world. Aged 60, he has been leading the National Bank of Romania for 19 years. Many commentators believe Isarescu saved Romania’s economy from a crisis like that facing the neighboring Bulgaria. During his term, the national gold and hard currency reserves have increased significantly, the inflation rate has dropped to a single digit level, and a new, stronger leu(the national currency) has been introduced. The World Records Academy compares Isarescu’s contribution to the Romanian economy to that of Laszcek Balcerowitz to the implementation of reforms in Poland.
The Dacia car made by the Romanian factory in Mioveni, in southern Romania, by the French company Renault saw the highest increase in the number of registrations in the first quarter of the year on west-European markets. According to the Association of European Car Makers, over 117,000 Dacia cars were registered in this period in the 27 EU member states, which accounts for a 58% growth. The Romanian factory celebrated this month the 10th anniversary of its take-over by Renault. In the meantime, it has become Romania’s biggest exporter of industrial goods. 80% of its production goes to foreign markets on 4 continents. The Logan model, which is best known in the world, is sold at the moment in 60 countries.
