Armenian president Serge Sarkissian will pay a visit to Romania in October, Romanian foreign minister Diaconescu announced during a press conference with his Armenian counterpart, on a visit to Romania. Diaconescu said, that, as a NATO and EU member, Romania supports sustainable development and security in the greater Black Sea area. The agenda of the talks included bilateral cooperation and common topics of interest. Minister Nalbandian will also be meeting members of the Armenian community.

European trade commissioner, Catherine Ashton, on Friday in Bucharest meets Romanian foreign minister Diaconescu, and chairman of the senate, Mircea Geoana. Topics under discussion will be the financial and economic crisis, and its impact on SMEs in Romania. Also under debate will be Romania’s policy towards its neighbors and certain protectionist measures aimed at sheltering certain areas of the Romanian economy.

The National Statistics Institute indicated that, in the first five months of 2009, Romania’s trade deficit went down 54% compared to the similar period in 2008, down to 3.6 billion Euro. According to their data, exports went down 9%, while imports went down 27%. Inflation increased by 0.2% in June since May, with higher prices for non-food items and services, with a slight decrease in prices for food. The annual inflation rate went from 5.95% last month to 5.86%.
