On a visit to Bucharest to attend a Romanian-Italian business forum, the Italian foreign minister Franco Frattini, a former European commissioner for justice, noted how similar the position of the two countries is with regard to a number of of international and regional issues. This aspect was also emphasized by the Romanian foreign minister Cristian Diaconescu:
“We are happy to note that, with regard to the Western Balkans and the European prospects of this region, Romania and Italy share the same point of view in terms of cooperating with the states in the region and supporting these states in their aspirations to become full-fledged members of the European Union.”
The two diplomats agreed that all EU member states must support the states in the Western Balkans in their European integration aspirations, overcoming certain prejudice and obstacles related to international law, as is the case with Serbia case. Romania, said Franco Frattini, is a success story for all candidate countries, because it also had to face a lot of prejudice directed against it, which it overcame in the process. The Italian foreign minister also said that the European Commission Mechanism for Cooperation and Verification should not start pointing the finger.
As a consequence, Romania should not be penalized for its delays in implementating legal reforms. Frattini proposed that a Romanian-Italian intergovernmental summit and a civil society forum be held this autumn. “The message we would like to send, said Frattini, is that there is not only a strong connection between our governments, but also a deep friendship between our peoples”. The Italian foreign minister announced that, as the host of the G8 summit, Italy will propose reducing taxes leveled on workers who send money back to their countries of origin, a measure which would benefit millions of Romanians currently working abroad. Franco Frattini:
“Our proposal will be to reduce these expenses by a half; current costs, which are as high as 10% at the moment, are exaggerated. The savings made by reducing these taxes should be returned to workers and their countries of origin.”
