A president for the Republic of Moldova |
(2012-03-16) |
Last updated: 2012-03-19 16:37 EET |
After a 3-year political stalemate, the Republic of Moldova finally has a president-elect. Following the parliament’s vote in Kishnev, the new head of state, the 64-year-old Nicolae Timofti, was a candidate of the ruling Alliance for European Integration. His election puts an end to a political crisis that so far saw two early legislative elections. Until now, Marian Lupu acted as interim president.
Timofti was backed by the 58 MPs of the Alliance for European Integration, one independent one and the Socialist MPs, former members of the Communist parliamentary group. All of the 62 MPs present in Parliament of the total 101, voted for Timofti’s election as head of state. The Communist opposition did not participate in the ballot.
This is not surprising, given that the Communists call for the parliament to be dissolved and for early elections to be held, saying the current Parliament functions illegally. Timofti, who is the head of the Judges’ Association of the Republic of Moldova, is known as a progressive, pro-European politician. He militates for a society based on democratic principles, the market economy and the rule of law, where human rights are guaranteed and genuinely defended.
He is also a staunch supporter of constitutional and legal reforms, while also backing the fight against corruption. He told Parliament that the European integration of the Republic of Moldova should unite a society currently divided along political, ethnic and cultural lines. He also said his country should have a balanced foreign policy and become a bridge between Western and Eastern Europe.
Timofti also spoke about a solution to the conflict in Transniester, a Moldovan region which broke off with the Republic of Moldova in the early 1990 following an armed conflict that left hundreds of people dead. The new president is in favour of a peaceful solution to the conflict and underscored that a foreign military presence in the Republic is unacceptable. He also proposed turning the peacekeeping mission on the Dniester river into a civil international mission.
