The budget deficit of Romania and four other EU member states is the focal point on the agenda of the talks at the Economic and Monetary Affairs Council, ECOFIN, hosted by Brussels. The European Commission has recently made public reports which show that Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland and Romania have exceeded the accepted budget deficit of 3% of the GDP. In June, the European Commission recommended to Romania to correct its excessive deficit by 2011, given the major imbalances in its economy.

Romanian Foreign Minister, Cristian Diaconescu on Monday met with visiting Italian Foreign Minister, Franco Frattini. The two officials tried to identify ways to develop the strategic partnership between the two countries and boost Romanian-Italian co-operation within the EU and other international organizations. Diaconescu and Frattini also analyzed the situation of the Romanian community in Italy, one of the largest such communities on the Peninsula, numbering some 1 million people. The two officials also attended the Economic Forum organized by Italian business people in Romania.

King Albert II of Belgium and his wife, Queen Paola on Monday started a 3 day official visit to Romania. King Albert will hold talks with Romania’s President Traian Basescu, the speakers of the two chambers of parliament and will participate in the Romanian-Belgian business forum. Queen Paola will visit the Village Museum and other cultural attractions in Bucharest. The royal couple will also go to Sibiu in central Romania, the 2008 European Capital of Culture. This is the only visit abroad paid by King Albert II in 2009 and the first by a Belgian monarch to Bucharest over the past 30 years.
