We invite you to send us the answers to the contest’s questions by mail, fax or e-mail. Depending on the complexity and accuracy of your answers you will win many prizes and other special prizes consisting of objects related to the life and work of George Enescu, to the Romanian symphonic music and to the Romanian culture in general.

The contest is sponsored by S.C ELECTRECORD S.A. and the “Official Gazette” and is supported by the “Casa Radio” Publishing House.

On August 19th 1881 George Enescu, the one who later became a great violinist, composer, pianist, conductor and teacher, was born in Liveni, Botosani county, in northern Romania. He was considered one of the most important musicians of the first half of the 20th century. He died in Paris on May 4th 1955.

The “George Enescu” International Festival and Contest was inaugurated in 1958 as a recognition of the genius of Romania’s great composer. This year’s edition includes almost 80 concerts and shows, grouped by genres, cycles and themes: “The Romanian Music of the 21th Century”, “Enescu and His Contemporaries”, “Big Orchestras of the World”, “Chamber Concerts”, “Midnight Concerts”, “Opera and Ballet Shows”, “Classical Themes in Modern Rendition”. The festival will take place between the 30th of August and the 26th of September in Bucharest. The participants in the Festival will be, as usual, great personalities of cult music. In parallel with the Festival, the “George Enescu” Contest will unfold in three sections: piano, violin and composition.

The Symphonic Suite Opus 1 “Romanian Poem”, the two Romanian Rhapsodies, the Symphonic Poem “Vox Maris” for soprano, tenor, choir and orchestra, Seven Songs on lyrics by Clement Marot, Suite no. 1 for orchestra, Suite for orchestra no. 2, the Opera “Oedipe” (his only opera), the Strings Quartet No. 2, the Chamber Symphony for 12 solo instruments, the 3rd Suite, “Saseasca”, the 3rd Sonata with Romanian folk influences, for violin and piano are the best known works by Enescu.

Enescu was also a great teacher who shaped such personalities as Yehudi Menuhin, Romanian born Dinu Lipatti, Ivry Gitlis, Christian Ferras, Ida Haendel and Arthur Grumiaux.
