Danger on the Danube

Dunare inghetata The river Danube froze completely, due to February’s plummeting temperatures, and with the weather predicted to get warmer, further problems are in store. Ice floes are expected to become an increasing problem, as well as flooding. The Southern area of Calarasi is suffering badly, after a ship sank last week and scores of other ships are adrift.

The authorities are seeking the best solution to avoid or reduce the potential damage caused by ice floes. Experts believe that using explosives to blow up the ice is not currently advisable, because the resulting blocks will not be able to disperse and will collect on the arms of the Danube’s over the coming days. Potential floods are expected to affect about 30,000 people living in riparian areas.

Creating a corridor down the center of the Danube is another formula that has been considered. Experts from the Romanian Water Association have warned that ice floes risk forming on the Danube by March 10th. They claim that, although the flow volumes of the river, as it enters the country, currently stand below the average for this time of the year, it will increase in certain regions, due to the currently rising temperatures. However, interior minister Gabriel Berca has given assurances that there are no reasons for concern.

Gabriel Berca: ‘’There are several critical areas and special operations are ongoing. We are monitoring the situation. Current data shows that we have no reasons to worry. The National Meteorology Administration forecast is positive and experts say we will overcome this.’’

A national emergency committee, along with the authorities from 12 riparian counties, have been monitoring the situation on the Danube since early this week. A crisis cell was set up at the Ministry of Transport, made up of experts from this ministry, as well as their colleagues from the Interior ministry, the Defense Ministry, the Environment Ministry and the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations. A helicopter from the Interior Ministry is surveying the Romanian part of the Danube, in order to assess the situation and the associated flood risks. An action and intervention strategy to clean up all of the Danube ice will be set out.
