Romania’s President Traian Basescu will participate on Thursday and Friday in Brussels in the meeting of the heads of state and government of the EU states. High on the agenda of the meeting are the economic and financial situation in the member states, the issue of climate change and sustainable development. The Romanian president said in Bucharest that Romania will not face uncontrolled economic and social collapse and that the current government is able to face the economic crisis. According to Basescu the Romanian economy cannot be re-launched by itself as it is dependent on the situation on the other markets to which it exports. More on this issue after the news.
A new case of swine flu was confirmed in Romania on Wednesday. The person contaminated is a man who travelled in the same plane with a little girl who was hospitalised several days before because of swine flu symptoms. This is the 17th case of contamination reported in Romania. The World Health Organisation has recently raised the H1N1 virus alert level to 6 on a six point scale. This is the first pandemics of the 21st century. According to latest data provided by the WHO over 36 thousand cases of swine flu have been reported in 76 countries; the swine flu virus has so far killed 163 people.
