Record High Prices for Fuels

Benzina Several days ago, OMV Petrom, the largest oil and gas company in Romania, raised gas and diesel oil prices for the 4th time this year. Rompetrol and Lukoil companies made similar decisions. The companies cite the rise in international stock exchange prices for oil products. Therefore the most expensive diesel oil costs 1.4 euros per liter, the same as one liter of gas.

Even under these circumstances, Romania is at the bottom of the European classification regarding fuel prices. Fuel prices in several European countries have reached record highs due to the stock exchange price of crude oil generated mainly by the situation in Iran. On short term, analysts don’t envisage any drop in stock exchange prices, and estimate that gas prices will continue to go up.

This was also confirmed by the OMV Petrom leadership that announced that they would also increase fuel prices in Romania in the near future. A higher fuel price will lead to higher transportation prices, and this will take its toll on the entire economy. Transporters, businesspeople as well as Romanian citizens accuse oil companies of “making the law” on the fuel market in Romania.

They also point an accusatory finger to the state, claiming that it hasn’t taken any measure to contain the oil price hikes. They call for transparency in calculating fuel prices, and demand the overtaxing of big oil companies and the setup of a genuinely competitive market. So far no initiative has met with success. Proof thereof is the fact that the profits of oil companies on the Romanian market continue to grow every year.

Last week, OMV Petrom announced that it obtained 887 million euros worth of profit, in 2011, the highest profit ever reported by a company in Romania. In terms of sales, OMV made 5.3 billion euros profit. Sanctions given by the Competition Council in Romania early this year have also failed to yield results.

The council applied record fines to big fuel distributors on the domestic market worth more than 205 million euros, after discovering that the respective companies had secretly agreed on withdrawing a type of gas from the market. The Competition Council has also announced that they are conducting another investigation trying to establish if the big oil companies in Romania colluded in an agreement on the prices at which to sell fuels in Romania. This investigation will be finalized by midyear.
