This means that, on average, there has been a new case every day. The last two people infected with the virus are the parents of a young man who recently flew back from Canada. The authorities explained that the virus is moderate in severity and that they have a national plan to cope with the flu pandemic declared last week by the World Health Organisation. An important component of this plan is the collaboration between the health ministry and the interior ministry. Here’s what the health minister Ion Bazac had to say about this collaboration:

“We have a good cooperation, and I would like to use this opportunity to thank the interior ministry again for their efforts. With their help, I hope we can trace all the people infected with the virus within 24 hours.”

The border police have put in place additional control measures for people, transport and goods that enter Romania. While the situation is far from being dramatic in this country, things are different elsewhere in the world. According to the latest World Health Organisation report, the AH1N1 virus, or the swine flu as it was previously known, has contaminated so far over 30,000 people in 74 countries and has caused the death of 145. The growing number of confirmed cases and deaths throughout the world has led the World Health Organisation to raise the level of alert to phase 6, the highest, which means a pandemic is under way.

It’s for the first time in 40 years that we are dealing with a pandemic, which the World Health Organisation head Margaret Chan says is unstoppable. Under the circumstances, pharmaceutical companies are now playing an extremely important role. A Swiss company said it already managed to make the first batch of vaccines against the AH1N1 flu and that it might produce millions of doses a week. The World Health Organisation said vaccines against the flu virus must be sold in pharmacies by the beginning of October at the latest.
