AMERICA AND THE MUSLIM WORLD 05/06/2009

The first African American President in the US history seems determined to try to follow a path of mutual understanding. The cycle of distrust and discord should be ended, he said in a speech delivered in Cairo. It’s an attitude consistent with the conciliatory stance he adopted when he was a mere presidential challenger.

At the same time, he extended an invitation to dialogue to Iran, which the West suspects of pursuing nuclear research for military purposes. The issue goes beyond America’s interests, Obama pointed out, while insisting on the need to nip in the bud a nuclear arms race in the Middle East, which could endanger peace in the region and the world.

Barack Obama has made an unprecedented gesture, admitting that the US, through CIA agents, was involved in the 1953 coup d’etat which toppled a democratically-elected government in Tehran. On his first visit to the region, the American President also talked about the legitimate aspirations of the Israeli and Palestinian peoples, aspirations that could become a fact through the two states’ co-existence in an atmosphere of peace and security.

That would be to the benefit of Israel, the Palestinians, America and of the whole world. However, his efforts to clearly prove that he has parted with the warlike policies typical of the Bush era are undermined by an unfavourable regional context. Iran is going to have presidential election and the Iranian politicians’ public discourse looks set to continue being as virulent as before. Ahead of Barack Obama’s statements, Iran’s spiritual leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, warned that Muslims’ hatred of America could not be erased with beautiful words, and that America should change its attitude.

Palestinians and Israelis have appreciated the positive intentions and the contribution made by the Obama administration to the Middle East peace process. But apart from that, it seems little has changed. The Hamas Palestinian hardliners maintain their objective of destroying Israel. On the other hand, the ruling Israeli right wants the Arab world to recognise Israel as the state of the Jewish people.

And the far right rules out giving up the Israeli settlements in the autonomous territories and will not accept the existence of an independent Palestinian state. Only the Israeli left received President Obama’s speech without reservation, a group that finds itself in opposition in the Parliament.
