Heavy Winter in Romania |
(2012-02-15) |
Last updated: 2012-02-16 12:53 EET |
Romania is one of the worst affected countries in Europe when it comes to the wave of cold and heavy snow in the last month, which made almost 100 victims. Worst affected are the south and east of the country, where tens of thousands were snowed in, without electricity, and often with scarce food, water and medicine.
Vrancea county has declared a state of alert, which allows it to tap into state reserves. A few isolated villages in the southeastern county of Buzau have also declared a state of alert. Soldiers, gendarmes, Special Emergency Inspectorate workers and locals have been digging tunnels through the snow banks 3 to 4 meters high in order to reach the people with no way out of their homes. Many of them are elderly, sorely in need of aid or of assisted living.
For the last few days, the Red Cross, the media, army, unions, the church, local councils and prefects have launched humanitarian campaigns all across the country in aid of the stranded. Romanians abroad have mobilized to help people back home. Collection centers for aid have opened in Spain and Italy. Thousands of schools and kindergartens in the south and southeast closed their gates for days on end, and some are still closed because of the weather.
Several national and county roads continue to be closed, with railroad, air and maritime traffic severely disrupted. The people affected by heavy winter have asked for aid from local and central authorities, but often these authorities claimed not to have enough machines and funds to remove the huge quantities of snow. The government approved distributing aid from state reserves.
In addition, the executive issued a decision by which Transelectrica, the state company managing the national electricity grid, will limit or cease exports of electricity until March 15, due to increased domestic consumption caused by extreme cold. Weather forecasts are not encouraging for the following weeks. For the next two days, a snow and blizzard code yellow alert has been issued for 11 counties in the center, north and north west of the country, which have so far been spared. There are fears that in the south the snowmelt could cause floods. However, temperatures are said to be quite low for the next few days, with a low risk of snow melting quickly.
