A STORM AT THE BEGINNING OF SUMMER 03/06/2009 |

A code yellow warning for bad weather and flooding, valid until Wednesday, was issued for most part of the Romanian territory Although no warning was in place for Bucharest, the capital city was swept on Tuesday night by a powerful storm which fortunately only caused material damage. The Bucharest mayor, Sorin Oprescu, said the storm caused over 400 incidents in various areas of the city, including felled trees, cracks in the water pipes, torn cables, damaged billboards and rooftops, flooded sewerage pipes, and, perhaps the worst thing for a big city, the disturbance of traffic. The powerful wind and rain also affected the flights from and to the country’s biggest airport, Henri Coanda (in Otopeni, near Bucharest), with many planes being delayed as they could no longer land or take off. Two planes flying from Sofia and Vienna were redirected to the Constanta airport, in the south-east. Mayor Oprescu said that later on Tuesday night Bucharest came back to normal, as most damage caused to the electricity networks were fixed and traffic was resumed across the city. Sorin Oprescu:
“Traffic has been resumed in all intersections, and streets cleared of all the trees felled by the storm in the middle of the city. Once the street maintenance and sanitation services clean the streets, everything will go back to normal. Of course the list of damage is probably longer. For example, a lot of trees were felled by the storm in the Herastrau and Tineretului parks. We will check to see if any other type of damage has occurred there, as well. Our priority is to have the big roads of access and the boulevards cleared so that people can travel safely to work.”
Traffic congestion is perhaps Bucharest’s biggest problem and bad weather such as we had on Tuesday night comes very close to paralysing the city. Luckily, the storm hit the city later in the evening, when the streets are not so busy anyway, so intervention teams had enough time to do their job. But Bucharest was not the only city affected by storm and rain. Bad weather caused damage in many other towns and villages in the south and centre of the country. As a result, a number of households have been flooded, electricity networks damaged and road and railway traffic was disrupted. In Sibiu, for example, which is currently hosting the third biggest theatre festival in Europe after Edinburgh and Avignon, several performances were cancelled because of heavy rain and wind.
