The decision made by officials in Bucharest last weekend to stamp out the A (H1N1) flu hotbed quite soon following the good condition of the three patients diagnosed with the illness, members of the same family, has been foiled by more cases being reported. One of the new patients is a Romanian-born woman who arrived from New York to Bucharest, just like the American woman of Romanian descent who came to Romania a few days ago, the first case being thus reported of AH1N1 flu, that has claimed the lives of over 100 people world wide. Just like in the former case, members of the family were contaminated. As a result of more cases being reported, Romanian officials have taken additional measures at the airport check points. Health Minister, Ion Bazac:
“We have decided to take additional measures: teams will be set up for epidemiological check-ups of passengers on board the plane, the moment the plane lands on the Otopeni terminal. There will be a special check-up of passengers coming from countries affected by flu; in keeping with the World Health Organization regulations, such countries are the USA, Mexico and Canada. Passengers will have to fill in forms upon entrance to Romania and o assume criminal responsibility if they deliberately make false statements or if they do not fill in those forms and subsequently display symptoms of the disease.”
“It is an efficient type of form, used in all European countries and it provides information allowing for the rapid identification of people suspected of being ill”, Minister Bazac also said, recalling that the measures were all the more necessary as starting this month, there are direct New York-Bucharest flights. Officials say that to render the process of filling in forms at the border check points more efficient, they are considering creating a special corridor for passengers coming from the USA, but by other flights. Health Minister’s advisor, Geza Molnar:
“At the moment, our major interest is in identifying and curbing the extension of any hotbed of flu that is emerging and might emerge in Europe, in the world, including Romania.”
Every day, some 356 people come to Romania from Mexico, 157 come by the New York-Bucharest direct flight and 56 by flights with stopovers.
