The Europe-Russia economic forum in Bucharest was aimed at analysing the cooperation between the European Union and Russia in terms of economy and politics. In an opening speech, Romanian President Traian Basescu stressed the need for cooperation between the EU and Russia in spite of a long list of divergent positions. Traian Basescu:

‘’Faithful to its multilateral vocation, the European Union will have to get Russia to cooperate and involve it in common projects. This is something that needs to be done against a background of distrust. The massive military attack on Georgia in 2008 and the gas crisis early this year have diminished the trust in Russia’s intentions and transparency. The European Union must accept Russia as it is, and ask instead for predictability and a minimum economic efficiency in exchange.”

President Basescu also stated that Romanians would continue to be good Europeans and good neighbors and stressed the importance of guaranteeing independence and integrity for the states in the region. Traian Basescu:

’’We, Romanians, will continue to be good Europeans, fulfill our pledges made before the EU and meet our obligations as part of the common foreign and security policy. We will also be good neighbors and will insist on guaranteeing the independence and integrity of all states in the region, including the issue of frozen conflicts. As a country that has known the advantages of free choice, Romania cannot support a different approach, as this is the only way to provide prosperity and a good living standard for as many people as possible.’’

The Romanian Economy Minister Adriean Videanu, who also attended the works of the forum, approached the issue of the Romanian-Russia cooperation in the energy sector. Adriean Videanu:

’’Following talks in Moscow, we have agreed to set up several Romanian-Russian join commissions in charge of working out, in 2 months, a memorandum of bilateral cooperation. A step forward has also been taken by the setting up of a Romgaz-Gazprom joint venture for the construction of some gas storage facilities and the production of electricity in this part of Europe.’’
