THE LATEST PRICE OF RUSSIAN GAS 22/05/09 |
(2009-05-22) |

On the one hand, taking over the ungrounded accusations levelled by the Communists in Chisinau, the foreign policy advisor to Russian President, Serghei Prihodko, lashed out at what he called “the provocations masterminded by Romania” in the neighbouring Republic of Moldova.
On the other hand, the Romanian minister of the economy, Adriean Videanu, and the vice-president of Gazprom company, Aleksandr Medvedev, in Moscow expressed their satisfaction with the results of the talks on cooperation in the natural gas field. Medvedev pointed out that the price paid by Romania for the Russian gas is similar to that paid by the other countries in the region, and that the average gas price estimated for 2009 will stand at about 220 dollars per one thousand cubic meters of gas. The two officials also talked about the setting up of a joint venture which should deliver Russian gas directly to Bucharest, with no intermediaries; another topic of the talks in Moscow was the participation of Gazprom in the construction, in Romania, of a gas power plant. Medvedev also pleaded for Romania’s involvement in the South Stream gas pipeline project.
“The South Stream project will look into ways to boost its capacity up to 63 billion cubic meters per year, and given that the pipeline will cross Romania’s economic zone in the Black Sea, we talked about the procedure to get the approvals for the subsequent prospecting and construction works. “
Romania’s minister of the economy, Adriean Videanu, said:
“The South Stream project has two dimensions: a political and a technical one. From a political point of view, Romania has not yet received any official invitation to participate in this project and practically we cannot have a standpoint. Technically speaking, we have expressed our availability to provide the Gazprom company with all the information necessary for the assessments they are going to make in the Romanian continental shelf zone, of course, under the international regulations. “
The Romanian minister’s obvious hesitation is related to Bucharest’s firm commitment to the Nabucco project, the gas pipeline meant to provide Europe with gas by detouring Russia, which thus diminishes Europe’s energy dependence on this country.
