The Ruling Coalition and the Opposition Argue in Brussels

USL in Parlamentul European Romanian President Traian Basescu has made it clear that the new treaty aimed at strengthening budget discipline within the EU will bring radical changes in Romania’s economic policies. The president has called on the Romanian political class to show responsibility in enacting the treaty. Meanwhile, heated discussions between Romanian politicians have now reached the European Parliament.

Upon his return from the European Council summit, President Traian Basescu has summed up the talks he had in Brussels. Known for his active role in drafting the government-backed economic policies, the president said the new treaty, primarily aimed at consolidating budget discipline within the EU, was bound to correct overspending trends.

Basescu said that both Romania and the whole of the EU have come to realize that they can’t just go on doing nothing while their debt continues to soar. The president again expressed his support for the ratification of the treaty, which, in his opinion, would make Romania more appealing to foreign investors. Traian Basescu:

Traian Basescu: “Romania needs to ratify the treaty in its entirety and carry out all its provisions from the very beginning, because we are very close to fulfilling all these provisions. If Romania should join the group of countries that can afford to make demands, this would create a platform for sound economic growth that would make Romania less dependent on any crisis and prosperity caused by overspending and soaring debt”.

The president has called on the Romanian political class to enact the provisions of the treaty with utmost responsibility in the years ahead. The request was made the very day when leaders of the Romanian ruling coalition and the opposition engaged in heated debates in the European Parliament, against the backdrop of anti-presidential and anti-government protests at home. Leaders of the Social-Liberal opposition held a debate called “Romanian Democracy. Political Abuse and the Citizens’ Reaction”, accusing the ruling coalition made up of the Liberal-Democratic Party, the Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians in Romania and the National Union for the Progress of Romania of stepping outside the boundaries of democracy by introducing controversial measures. Social-Democrat leader Victor Ponta has provided several examples of such abuses:

Victor Ponta: “You cannot just postpone or merge elections, you can’t just seek the Parliament’s confidence vote for every fundamental law of this country, without holding a public debate”.

Attending the debate was Liberal-Democrat Labour Minister Sulfina Barbu, who retorted:

Sulfina Barbu: “Unfortunately, we were forced to resort to the constitutional right of seeking a vote of confidence in Parliament, due to the opposition’s unwillingness to start a dialogue”.

The debate in Brussels was held one day ahead of this week’s Parliament sitting in Bucharest, which is marked by the protest of the opposition, who threatens to go on parliamentary strike.
