May 9th, Europe Day, marks this year 59 years since the beginning of the creation of the community space. On 9 May, 1950, in Paris, against the threat of World War 3 breaking out, French foreign minister Robert Schuman extended a historic invitation to European unity, proposing the creation of a supranational European entity, in charge of managing the coal and steel industries, vital at that time. Five countries answered the call, and, one year later, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg and Holland signed, alongside France, the Treaty of Paris, laying the cornerstone of the EU.

Right now, the Union has 27 members, and gathers together 500 million citizens, including, since early 2007, 22 million Romanians. They celebrated this anniversary with various events, either in official events, organized by the authorities, or in their own personal style, going on picnics or gathering for barbeques. There were open air shows in Bucharest parks, there was a mass Euro-dance in Pitesti, north of the capital, an event where traditional dances from several European countries were performed, and several aerobatics shows. What is the meaning of this day for Romanians?
Here is President Traian Basescu:

“May 9th is a day dedicated to the joy of togetherness, to the will to solidarity, to the joy of being in the community they are a part of. Europe Day is the day of citizens belonging to a united Europe, which was built along the decades as unity through diversity. For us, Romanians, 9th of May is a symbol of independence, gained during the reign of King Carol I, who had a decisive contribution to the European modernity of our country. The principle of solidarity has allowed the union to overcome many difficulties in the 60 years of existence. Today, the 27 member states and the entire international community faces the most serious economic and financial challenges since the great depression of 1930. We believe that the Union has the resources to find a solution for overcoming the crisis and for economic recovery”.

For Romanians, May 9th has a triple significance: it is Europe Day, State Independence day, and the day of victory against the Nazi threat.
