The international community is on high alert after to the swine flu outbreak in Mexico, where the highest death toll was reported. The virus spread rapidly to the U. S. where the authorities declared a state of health emergency, then to Canada, and then crossed the Ocean to reach Europe. The World Health Organisation raised the alert level to Phase 4, on a scale of 1 to 6, and warned that the virus might reach all regions of the world, fearing a possible swine flu pandemic. The mutations suffered by this flu virus, and especially the speed of human-to-human transmission, have prompted national and international health authorities to take urgent measures. The EU recommended the European citizens to avoid travelling to the areas affected by swine fever but did not ban imports of pork, because experts claim the virus is not transmitted by eating pork but by air, being from person to person.

In Romania the authorities said no case of swine flu has been reported and there is no imminent danger of a swine flu outbreak, but they have started to take measures to prevent such an event. All institutions are bound to respect the European Union epidemiology plan, said the Romanian health minister, Ion Bazac, fresh from a meeting of the Committee for Emergency Situations. He announced health facilities were ready to cope with any first cases of swine flu, with special wards and anti-viral medication available for potential patients. The National Health-Veterinary and Food Safety Authority toughened border checks and decided to monitor pig farms and animals bred in individual households. Checks are also carried out on livestock imports.

The Romanian press gives wide coverage to this issue. “The onslaught of the swine virus” writes the daily EVENIMENTUL ZILEI, informing its readers that the lethal flu has reached Europe and that symptoms are similar to those of ordinary flu. Although no cases of swine flu have been reported in Romania so far the journalists of the daily paper GARDIANUL have published a warning from European experts: “The H1N1 virus will hit Romania within 3 weeks”.

On the other hand, the journalists of the daily paper GANDUL are making fun of the prevention measures taken by the authorities in Bucharest: “Romania is fighting the swine flu with leaflets, wet mats and increased vigilance”, writes an article in this newspaper, referring to the rubber mats with disinfectant that have been laid in airports, the monitoring of people coming from the areas affected by the virus, and the leaflets describing the symptoms of the disease being distributed. It seems that the swine flu will be a boon for drug companies which have reported a sharp rise in demand for flu vaccines and medication.
