SPRING TOURISM IN ROMANIA |

The world economic crisis doesn’t seem to affect Romanian tourism, if we believe tourism officials in this country. Traian Badulescu, the spokesman of the National Association of Tourist Agencies is even optimistic based on the fact that Easter tourist packages for the Romanian Black Sea coast and also for Bulgaria and Greece have sold very well this spring, in fact even better than last year, when 110,000 Romanians travelled inside Romania and abroad.
According to Badulescu, 60,000 Romanians bought 3 to 4 day tourist packages from travel agencies to spend the Easter holiday in the country for a price of approximately 150 euros per person in a two star hotel. They could also benefit from the facilities provided by the programme One Week in the Mountains launched by the Federation of the Romanian Tourist Employers, a low budget programme including a 5 day stay in a two star hotel for 40 euros per person.
As a result of the economic crisis, it seems that more and more Romanians choose to spend their holidays in the country. Romania has considerable tourist potential which has not been properly exploited. To boost the development of this industry, the government recreated the Ministry of Tourism in 2009 and appointed Elena Udrea, who is close to president Traian Basescu, as the minister of tourism.
Udrea’s first move was to persuade the government to introduce a type of holiday package paid by companies and granted to employees who wish to spend their holidays in Romania. The measure has not been implemented yet, but a step in the right direction has been made. Opinion polls have shown that Romanians are more and more willing to give themselves a ‘bonus’ to compensate for the hard times of recession. On Sunday, over 10,000 tourists took by storm the Mamaia resort on the Black Sea coast and attended a concert given by the Serb musician Goran Bregovich.
You could spot in the audience president Traian Basescu and Elena Udrea, who came to the concert riding a bicycle. She used the opportunity to announce that Romania will change its tourist slogan from Simply Surprising to Romania, the Land of Choice. On the 1st of May, the traditional date for the start of the tourist season, Romania’s first ever tourism anthem will also be launched. Besides a different packaging, Romanian tourists are particularly looking forward to an improvement in the quality of tourist services and a better quality/price ratio.
