The political opposition in the ex-Soviet, mostly Romanian-speaking Republic of Moldova, has called on international institutions to help clarify the situation of those arrested by the police, following the anti-communist protests of last week in Chisinau. In support of their appeal, the liberal mayor of the capital Chisinau, Dorin Chirtoaca, has prepared a file that includes medical certificates as well as photo, video and audio evidence of the violent treatment against the arrested. Vlad Filat, head of the Moldovan Liberal Democratic Party signals these violent acts:
'' There are still many people whom we know nothing about, there are parents who have phoned us at the party headquarters or have contacted our colleagues outside Chisinau; we know nothing about these young people; their names are not on the list made public by the Interior Ministry. They are neither in campuses or universities, nor at home. We have an awful feeling that we are going to find many of them in a terrible condition.''
A UN representative in the Republic of Moldova, quoted by the Moldovan media, has denounced the serious human rights violations in the case of those arrested. Edwin Berry has said he visited a prison on Saturday and he talked to 40 prisoners. He has revealed that the young people were beaten and complained about being poorly fed and having no access to a lawyer. The situation in the Republic of Moldova is monitored with great concern by the Bucharest institutions and civil society. Romanian President Traian Basescu , before presenting his official stand in Parliament's plenary session, said that Bucharest will have a responsible attitude towards the 4 million Romanian ethnics in the Republic of Moldova. Traian Basescu:
''I want you to know that, on the one hand, I was patient enough to wait for a comprehensive analysis of the situation in the Republic of Moldova, and, on the other, I felt that replying across the fence to Moldovan President Voronin was exactly the game he would have liked Romania to play. Of course, he can try to raise an iron curtain over the Prut River. We will not give him the opportunity to do that. We will adopt a European, responsible attitude, not towards President Voronin, but towards the 4 million Romanians living in the Republic of Moldova, 4 million Romanians, citizens of that country, but also part of the Romanian nation.''
