AND STILL, SOMETHING IS WRONG IN CHISINAU 13/04/2009

A joint press release issued by the three pro-European opposition parties, namely the Liberal Party, Democratic Liberal Party and an alliance called “Our Moldova”, summarises all the political developments of this past week in Chisinau. “The parliamentary election on April 5th, 2009, and the events that followed, prove the deeply anti-popular and dictatorial nature of the communist regime imposed by Vladimir Voronin in the ex-Soviet, mostly Romanian-speaking Republic of Moldova. The election rigging, the staging of an alleged coup by storming the Parliament and Presidency buildings, blaming the opposition and accusing Romania of involvement in the rioting, the repression, with unprecedented violence, by police and the judiciary of children, youth and all citizens across the Republic, have shed light on the true targets of the communist regime.” The crackdown headed by the former Soviet police general Voronin against his own people pushes Moldova back to the years before Gorbachev’s perestroika.

And the hundreds of abusive arrests, the foreign journalists expelled from the country and at least one person beaten to death in a police station, have turned Moldova into a second Belarus. In an awkward move trying to put a face-lift on the situation, the Constitutional Court ordered a recount of the ballots cast in the general election, whose official returns guaranteed the communists’ monopoly on power. But, for the opposition, this ruling only diverts attention from the true problem. Namely the lists of voters used in the election, which include tens of thousands of names of emigrants or of dead people, on whose behalf votes have been cast nonetheless. Mayor of Chisinau and vice-president of the Liberal Party, Dorin Chirtoaca, says the ultimate goal no longer has to do with the election result, but with putting an end to the repression:

“We will continue to call on international institutions to intervene in the Republic of Moldova and end the terror inflicted by the communist government. This is the most important thing we must do at this point. The election issue is a separate one, one we are collecting evidence to prove that the election was rigged. But first and foremost, because we need to sort out the problem of the young people who are being mistreated. We need to have international institutions firmly committed to ending the violence in police stations.”
