President Traian Basescu 2012 is the year of legislative elections in Romania. As for its foreign policy, this year Romania will make efforts to help achieve the EU’s goal of overcoming the economic and financial crisis. Romania became a member of the EU on January 1st 2007, now celebrating five years since this country joined the big family of European democracies. Under these auspices Romania’s President Traian Basescu extended his co-nationals his wishes of good health and trust in the future.

The head of state said that Romanians should be proud that, through coordinated efforts as a nation, they managed to overcome the difficulties that marked the year 2011. The anti-crisis measures taken by the Bucharest government, termed as too tough by some of the political parties in Romania, reduced the global crisis’ effects on Romania in 2011 quite significantly, believes the President.

In his New Year address, posted on the Presidential Administration’s website, the head of state wishes that 2012 will bring back optimism to Romanians’ hearts, as well as confidence that they can succeed in achieving their goals by proving solidarity with the destiny of their nation.

“Romania’s most important assets are its people, and Romanians, more than ever, need to know and believe that they can create a country, as they want it to be, through their own will and efforts”, President Basescu says in his speech.

The President also sent a message to the over 10 million Romanians living abroad. “May the New Year bring to the hearts of all Romanians, be they in the country or in the Diaspora, joy, hope and the courage to embrace and fulfill the destiny of a people meant to achieve prosperity”, says President Basescu in his New Year’s address.
