Two American – European summits dominated the end of last week. US and European leaders want to give a fresh impetus to trans-Atlantic relations, especially after the change of administration in Washington, in the current political, economic and security context. The summit that marked 60 years since the establishment of the North Atlantic Alliance, for the first time organised jointly by two countries, France and Germany, was considered by the Alliance leaders a meeting focused on results. NATO now has 28 members, after Croatia and Albania joined in. The issues tackled at the summit were the future role of the organisation in this century, the revitalisation of NATO’s relation with Russia, and a new strategy for Afghanistan, which is the top priority of the Alliance at the moment.

NATO leaders have pledged to send more troops- 5000 soldiers- to guarantee the security of the presidential elections to be held in August, and to provide funds for the Afghan army. The informal US- EU meeting in Prague was dominated by the world financial and economic crisis. The president of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso, said the world is safer and more prosperous with Europe and the US cooperating as global partners. In both meetings Romania was represented by president Traian Basescu.

Bucharest’s objectives at the NATO summit “have been fully reached”, Basescu said after the summit. The final declaration of the summit mentions the fact that the Alliance is open towards Bosnia-Hertzegovina, Montenegro and Serbia, and the idea of involving the international community in settling the conflict in Georgia, and reiterates the support for the territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova. As regards Afghanistan Basescu pointed out that Romania fulfilled all the pledges it made, by deploying one thousand soldiers in that country.

In relation to the informal meeting hosted by Prague, president Basescu said the trans-Atlantic relationship was of a strategic nature, and it should be supported and developed. He added that new parameters were set in the relationship between the EU and the US, and the basis was set for a partnership regarding the major issues facing the world today: the economic and financial crisis and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Traian Basescu:

“Joint action is vital, and although the way in which the US and the EU approach things is slightly different in nuance, mainly regarding US funding policy in the banking system and the financial involvement of the EU, the conclusion was that the crisis would be overcome once the US and the EU re-launched their economies”.
