WHY IS NATO IMPORTANT?

Romania's accession to NATO was the outcome of an effort undertaken by all parties, with a view to reshape the Romanian society after its five-decade communist plight, and it marked the country's official return to the club of European democracies. In essence, that was the message conveyed by the politicians who took the floor in Parliament.

They did not forget to honour the Romanian troops that lost their lives in foreign theatres, and stressed that the Romanian participation in NATO missions in Afghanistan and Kosovo proves Romanian's commitment to the values promoted by NATO. This contribution was also praised by the US president Barack Obama, in a letter addressed to his Romanian counterpart, Traian Basescu, and to prime minister Emil Boc.

But today, the Alliance is required to undergo in-depth change so as to be able to face old and new threats alike. President of Romania, Traian Basescu:

“The 21st Century is defined by the subsistence of some of the traditional threats, doubled by new threats at the allies' security. Ballistic missiles, cyber attacks or disruption of energy resource flows are concerns that top NATO's agenda at present.”

Expressing his solidarity with neighbouring democracies that seek NATO membership, Senate Speaker Mircea Geoana announced that the Romanian mandate at this year's NATO summit would be consistent with the allies' promise to carry on the enlargement process, as agreed in the 2008 NATO summit in Bucharest. Mircea Geoana:

“No steps back from the decisions made in the Bucharest summit. The Alliance's doors remain open to any democracy that meets the NATO accession criteria.”

The NATO enlargement is also central in the statement adopted by the Parliament in Bucharest. Deputy Titus Corlatean:

“It is our belief that first and foremost NATO must remain a collective defence alliance. We support the continuing promotion of an active NATO policy to attract Western Balkan states, we continue to support Georgia's and Ukraine's accession endeavours, provided that they prove their capacity to meet the required criteria, and that they act responsibly and predictably in international relations.”
