The government is Bracing Up for a Fresh No-Confidence Vote |

The opposition in Bucharest is trying to severely sanction the government made up of the Liberal-Democratic Party and the Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians in Romania for its intention to hold joint local and parliamentary elections next year. The censure motion forwarded by the Social-Liberal Union (USL) has been read out before Parliament after the executive assumed responsibility for a draft law providing for joint local and legislative elections.
The USL has deemed the move as tantamount to a blatant infringement of democratic rules, being also aimed at rigging the elections. According to Liberal MP Eugen Nicolaescu, the draft law is indicative of the crisis within the Liberal-Democratic Party, which is stemming from the lack of people’s support.
Eugen Nicolaescu: “Assuming responsibility before Parliament for an anti-democratic draft law, which involves a no-confidence vote, the Boc government proves once again the existence of a crisis and confusion within the party caused by the plummeting confidence of the Romanians; this move is not for the benefit of the country, it’s only the Liberal-Democrats’ need to secure as good an election timetable as possible in 2012.”
The opposition finds the financial argument invoked by the ruling coalition, namely to reduce election costs, as outrageous. The argument is shared even by neutral observers, who argue that democracy rules should prevail even in times of crisis. They warn that intricate election campaigns and the large number of ballots will bewilder the voters.
However, the government argues the move is entirely constitutional and the no-confidence vote will not get majority. The Liberal-Democrats are confident the party has taken all the necessary measures to curtail the effects of the crisis and the population has started to understand the situation. Here is Sever Voinescu, spokesman for the Liberal-Democratic Party.
Sever Voinescu: “You’ve heard the statements made by certain socialist leaders; they don’t trust their own motion either. All in all, the socialists’ lack of trust in their own actions speaks volumes about something they know very well, namely the fact that public opinion has already understood that the Liberal Democratic Party’s popularity is on the rise whereas the Socialists’ is weaning, because we’ve done the right thing in difficult times and we’ll keep steady at it in spite of all the political risks involved.”
The censure motion, the tenth facing the Emil Boc cabinet so far, will be debated on Thursday. In case they fail to oust the government, the Social-Liberals will try to block the draft law on holding jointlocal and parliamentary elections at the Constitutional Court.
