Steaua Bucuresti Romanian football has given Romanians reason to take to the streets once again. Hundreds of Steaua Bucharest fans on Wednesday night celebrated their team’s qualification to the round of last 32 of Europea League. In Bucharest, in front of a 50,000-strong crowd, the Romanian side managed to ease past AEK Larnaca of Cyprus, final score 3-1.

With that result, Steaua Bucharest has finished group J in second place, managing to get past the group phase after a five-year break. The last time was in the 2006-2007 season, when Steaua finished 3rd group E of Champions League, but was subsequently knocked out in the 16th finals of the UEFA Cup by FC Sevilla of Spain.

This year, Steaua Bucharest has secured its qualification after a relatively poor run with two wins, two draws and two losses. At the group phase draw, Steaua was deemed favourite to progress to the next round alongside the German side Shalke 04, while the other two teams were seen as “third-world” football teams, coming from Israel and Cyprus. Maccabi Haifa and AEK Larnaca however have risen well above their assigned standard, and put on an impressive show and even secured some spectacular wins.

On October 20th, Maccabi smashed a 5-nil win over Steaua, thus narrowing down Steaua’s hopes of qualifying. However Steaua managed to get their game together and pulled a series of positive results, of which the decisive two wins with Maccabi and Larnaca, which sealed their place in the European spring. Steaua Bucharest also owes its European progress to the other group fixtures, given that Maccabi had a run of three consecutive losses following the incredible win over Steaua.

Unfortunately, Steaua Bucharest is the only Romanian team to clinch a spot in the Europa League spring. FC Vaslui ended group D in 3rd place, with Sporting Lisbon and Lazio Rome advancing to the next stage. Rapid Bucharest, on the other hand, irrespective of other group fixtures, is left with zero chances of moving on to the next phase. The next round of European League is the round of last 32, with matches scheduled to kick-off starting February 2012. The draw for the round of 32 will be held on Friday in Switzerland.
