Mircea Geoana says he will appeal a Senate ruling acknowledging the end of his term as Senate speaker at the Constitutional Court. Geoana was removed from the second most important position in the state after being excluded from the Social Democratic Party, which he led for 5 years until early 2010. The party’s current leaders say he has repeatedly violated decisions laid down in the party statute, including a decision to give up his senate speaker position as requested by the Social Democratic Party’s executive board.

The criticism levelled at Geoana was compounded by allegations regarding activities intended to divide the Social Democratic Party and destabilize the Social Liberal Union, an opposition alliance in which the Social Democrats hold the main role. And to cap it all, there still is resent caused by the 2009 elections that the Social Democratic Party lost when its presidential candidate was Mircea Geoana. We recall that a particular event that occurred the night before the elections also contributed to his demise: Mircea Geoana was seen calling on the controversial businessman Sorin Ovidiu Vantu in the middle of the night. “Rarely has a politician had such great opportunities in his career and failed so miserably”, the daily Jurnalul National writes.

The newspaper adds that “Geoana’s exclusion, which was by no means predictable a while ago, seems more of a flexing of the muscles by the current Social Liberal president Victor Ponta.” “Geoana’s exclusion gives the impression of an immature show of political strength, rather than a rational political move”, the daily writes. The explanation, according to this publication, is that “the infighting, totally unproductive in terms of image, will only eat away at the popularity ratings of the Social Liberal Union, which has taken its promising early opinion poll results for granted.” The daily Romania Libera shares this view: “Victor Ponta has sacrificed the most important position held by the opposition to get rid of his rival Mircea Geoana, while the party wins nothing in exchange.”

The daily Evenimentul Zilei writes: “as soon as the Senate speaker chair was empty, several candidates emerged and negotiations to obtain the majority have begun.” “Geoana, banished from the Senate – the Liberal Democratic Party and the Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians in Romania are fighting for the position”, headlines the newspaper Bursa. The two parties, which make up the current ruling coalition, do not seem to see eye to eye on the matter. While the Liberal Democratic Party seems to agree to the nomination of a single candidate for the Senate speaker position from the government coalition, the Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians in Romania would like to come up with its own candidate. The opposition, which doesn’t have enough votes to secure the election of its own candidate, still hopes to somehow secure this position.
