Foggy weather has caused disruptions in Romanian transport, and has primarily affected the road infrastructure. County and national roads, as well as large motorway segments have been covered by dense fog. The Romanian traffic police authority has warned of very low visibility in several parts of the country.

The most affected areas are counties in the Southern, Southwestern, Eastern and central parts of the country. The police has advised motorists to use their short beam lights or fog lamps on all types of roads, to limit their speed and increase the safety distance between cars. Despite these warnings, the number of road accidents has increased considerably.

Foggy weather has also taken its toll on air and sea traffic. Two airplanes scheduled to land at Constanta’s “Mihail Kogalniceanu” International Airport, heading from Istanbul and Pisa, have been rerouted to other airports in the country. Romanian seaports – Midia, Mangalia, Constanta North and Constanta South – have been closed to traffic. Fog has also forced a halt on barge traffic through the Agigea lock on the Danube – Black Sea Canal. Authorities have announced that port activity will be resumed when the weather allows it.

Meanwhile, meteorologists bring more bad news for the following days. Temperatures are expected to drop to –10 Celsius in most parts of the country. Aside from the fog, motorists will have to deal with another hazard – glazed frost on the roadways, which is a major factor increasing the number of accidents, according to traffic police. However, this toll could be limited under the law, given that motorists are obliged to use snow tires on their vehicles. Romania is infamous as the EU country with the most frequent road accidents.
