“Cozma’s killer finally caught” – headlines the Bucharest daily paper Evenimentul Zilei, after authorities detained the two suspects involved in the murder of Marian Cozma, pivot for the Romanian national men’s handball team. The tragic event took place Satuday night in a discotheque in Hungary, and also involved the severe injuring of two other athletes, one of Serbian nationality, and one Croatian. The Romanian newspaper Cotidianul headlines “Romanian handballer executed by mafia clan”, and quotes Hungarian papers as saying, quote “Gypsies killed in Veszprem”. Unqote. According to local officials, the murderers are dangerous hardened offenders, members of the mafia in Western Hungary.

Jurnalul National writes that, quote “after viewing the surveillance tapes from the nightclub, authorities concluded that the athletes were in no way aggressive, and that the attackers were under the influence of alcohol.” End of quote. “Efficiency: in 24 hours, the Hungarians caught the murderer”, says the Romanian newspaper Gandul, saluting the promptitude shown by the Hungarian police.

Romania Libera jokes, wondering rhetorically if we shouldn’t “ask for help from the Hungarian police in the Gorbunov case”. The newspaper condemns the fact that, quote “eleven days after the double murder at a Brasov exchange office, Romanian police are still tangled in the alibi given by Moldovan mafia member Serghei Gorbunov, whom they have taken off their list as a prime suspect.” Unquote.

In 2005, handballer Marian Cozma was attacked in a Bucharest street and severely injured, while the attackers have remained unknown to this day. Romania Libera also quotes Adrian Moraru, head of the Institute for Public Policies, as saying that “the difference between investigations run by authorities in Romania in Hungary is a result not of the policemen’s competence or intelligence, but of the overwhelming bureaucracy suffocating Romania.” Moraru concludes that, quote “In Romania, it takes three days for a police general to sign a paper, which then has to be stamped 15 times”.
