ROMANIA CELEBRATES EUROPE DAY (10.05.2007) |
(2007-05-10) |
Last updated: 2007-05-10 16:00 EET |
Romanians have celebrated Europe Day on May the 9th for the first time ever as members of the large Community family. Throughout the country joy, merry-making and optimism reigned supreme.
Let us start with Romania’s capital city, Bucharest, whose streets were wheezing with the songs of no less that 400 instrumentalists of brass bands coming from some of the EU member states: Bulgaria, Cyprus, Germany, Lithuania, Italy, Spain and of course Romania.
After a glitzy parade in the University Square right in the heart of Bucharest, the brass bands gave a delightful concert till late at night. On Europe Day a special event was also organized by our radio station, in the form of a literary marathon. In one of the Romanian Radio Broadcasting Corporation’s studios, over 300 people, most of them high-school students, twice read, from cover to cover well-known writer Mircea Eliade’s novella, “The Old Man and the Bureaucrats”.
A similar event was organized by seven other EU member states. So we can say on May the 9th quality reading was concurrently performed in Romania, Italy, Spain, Bulgaria, Greece, Finland, Great Britain and Poland. Also, it was not by chance that the cultural marathon was opened in Bucharest by Romanian Leonard Orban, the European Commissioner for multilingualism, who read a page from Mircea Eliade’s work himself.
Regions outside Bucharest also went to great lengths to match Bucharest’s performance. Europe Day occasioned interesting, tasty and extremely original events across the country. Some even thought to display 27 whipped cream cakes decorated with the maps of the EU member states. After having been admired, the goodies were of course eaten.
Traditional cuisine was one of the day’s strongest points: people clad in traditional outfit presented dishes specific to the EU countries: Prague ham, French fries, Italian pasta or the Romanian eggplant salad. And we can ramble on like that, but we shall stop here before your mouth waters too much. Cross-country races were organised for athletes, as well as roller-skating and cycling competitions. Snooker, table-tennis, chess, football and martial arts events were also held on May 9. People made merry and danced; the high-brow enjoyed scientific sessions, as well as art exhibitions and general knowledge contests. Peace-bringing pigeons were launched up in the sky, as well as balloons with the emblem of the European Union.
So, a wide array of events by which Romanians celebrated, along with all other Europeans, Europe Day, a celebration which fully deserved its “unity in diversity” label. (Roxana Vasile)
