Another scandal has inflamed the Romanian political scene, which has been increasingly troubled in the run up to the referendum on the impeachment of president Traian Basescu.

The new minister of justice, Tudor Chiuariu, has called on the Higher Council of the Magistracy to revoke an assistant to the head of the National Anti-Corruption Department on grounds of inefficiency. Prosecutor Doru Tulus had been working on the files of the so-called big fish of corruption among which a file regarding a former vice-premier accused of tax dodging and many others involving MPs accused of corruption.

The head of the National Anti-Corruption Department, Daniel Morar, was quick to react to the justice minister’s move, accusing him of interference in the judicial process.

The daily newspaper “Romania Libera” asks: Will they start to block important files? and says that the justice minister has asked for the approval of the Higher Council of the Magistracy for the dismissal of the respective prosecutor without showing the reasons why he asked for his dismissal.

“The prosecutor in charge of the heavy corruption files punished for having obtained good results” – writes the daily Cotidianul, adding that the justice minister has joined the group of corruption sharks. The newspaper reviews the names of those MPs accused of corruption: Dan Voiculescu, a fierce critic of president Traian Basescu and the president of the Conservative Party, accused of money laundering, or Marko Bela, the leader of the Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians in Romania who received royalties for books that he has not published yet.

Under the heading “Chiuariu is playing the political game of suspending prosecutors with the National Anti-Corruption Department” the daily CURENTUL writes that this crisis started when the leader of the Conservatives was indicted.

The daily Evenimentul Zilei writes that Tudor Chiuariu has started to do his duty towards the oligarchy that made him head of the Romanian judiciary. The same newspaper recalls that more than 35 prosecutors with the National Anti-Corruption Department have expressed their support for prosecutor Tulus and have protested against the brutal and biased manner in which the minister of justice asked for his dismissal.

The scandal has sparked when Bucharest was waiting for a report from Brussels on the progress made in the reform of the judiciary. The European Commission has drawn the attention of the Romanian politicians that it is critical that reforms and the fight against corruption should not be stopped, and interference through changes, dismissals or appointments should be avoided.
