Regele Mihai I al Romaniei. The historic speech held by former King of Romania Mihai I in front of Parliament on his 90th birthday is now the main topic of discussion for the press in Bucharest, which unanimously acclaims His Majesty’s graciousness, steadiness and pragmatism. The King’s message to the people shows he continues to serve as an inspiration for the disoriented Romanian society.

According to the daily Adevarul, “The king’s speech addressed ardent issues like political duality, the disregard for values, institutional crises and the ailments of the powerless and helpless”. Adevarul also writes: “unlike what we usually see in Parliament, the king’s speech was held in front of a solemn crowd and received unanimous applause”. The article “20 minutes of common sense”, featured in the daily Gandul, castigates the absence of certain high-ranked officials from what many have called a historic event.

The publication writes: “Their presence, simply out ofpolitical courtesy, would have showed that Romania knows how to pay tribute to historical symbols, knows how to cherish its past and is able to stand together united, at least in exceptional moments”. Gandul goes on to write: “They chose not to come, either from personal resentment, either to obey political higher-ups, and gave pathetic excuses of being too busy.

Sitting there with their ephemeral ranks, they want to challenge the nation’s history, but they are too little for it”. Romania Libera asks “Could monarchy save Romania?”, alluding to a slogan that stirred the public back in the 90s. “Short, simple and modest” is how the daily describes the king’s memorable speech. Nostalgically, Romania Libera concludes: “Nevertheless, the speech contained words that were never heard coming from post-communist Romanian politicians: duty, courage, loyalty, memory, morals, faith, love for the country. These are the very values needed to restore constitutional monarchy in Romania”.

The international press also noticed the former Romanian King’s appearance in front of Parliament. Reuters noted that “even though polls show most Romanians would not favor the return of monarchic rule, post-communist leaders have tried to limit Michael’s influence, fearing it might erode their own power”. The French daily Le Monde also wrote that “despite his 90 years of age, Michael still causes a stir among the Romanian political class”. In turn, France Presse called the speech “an unprecedented event in the former communist country”.
