‘’Anything is possible in America.’’ This formula, preferred by the daily paper Jurnalul National to preface Barak Obama’s presidential mandate, is as common place as it is true. The triumphal march to the White House of a man who not until long ago was an outsider of the big American politics, has stirred great expectations and has fuelled extreme feelings. On the one hand, the daily newspaper Ziua says, American racists, unable to accept a US black President, have made ‘’no less than 500 death threats’’ against him, while special services ‘’ have already foiled several assassination attempts’’. On the other hand, the aforementioned paper writes, from the Africa of his ancestors to Brussels, from Latin America to Israel, the ‘’obamania’’ has spread everywhere.
Thus, Cotidianul paper says, ‘’the entire planet has entered the Obama age’’. Adevarul newspaper quotes American expert Ariel Cohen as warning Romanians that quote‘’the privileged relationship between the US and Eastern Europe is history’’,unquote given that the new administration, having to deal with serious problems like the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the world economic crisis and the North Korean and Iranian nuclear files, quote ‘’will simply have priorities in other strategic areas.’’ End of quote. The daily paper Romania Libera is equally sceptical, saying that quote ‘’Obama has had a short but successful political career, that is why little is known about his leader’s skills.’’ Unquote. Moreover, the paper warns, although due to his position quote ’’ he may well be the most powerful man in the world, yet, he is not omnipotent.’’ In short, ‘’Obama is not the Messiah descended to Earth to save mankind. He is the 44th president of the United States. And that’s all there is to it.’’
