The car accident caused by popular Romanian TV producer Serban Huidu that left three dead on Sunday continues to hit the headlines of most newspapers and to open TV news bulletins. “Huidu’s victims had no chance”, writes the daily paper Evenimentul Zilei, perhaps only if the Dacia Logan that collided with Huidu’s SUV, a Mercedes ML, had been driven by a racecar pilot.
The paper attempted to reenact the incident, with the help of national rally champion Mihai Leu, in a location near the actual site in Brasov County. He said that “glazed frost on the road caught both drivers by surprise” as according to law they were only required to install snow tires starting November 1st. Leu added that the car driven by Serban Huidu “is very heavy, which makes it difficult to handle once it’s out control”.
The newspaper also writes that on his hospital bed, Huidu said his car had slid dangerously, but the police are also considering an illegal overtaking manoeuvre. Evenimentul Zilei also quotes professor doctor Constantin Popa from the Bucharest Institute of Cerebrovascular Diseases as saying that the skiing accident previously suffered by Huidu in December of 2010 might have narrowed his attention span. Back then, Huidu suffered a head trauma and was subsequently placed in an artificial coma for four days. Months of recovery followed, during which time Huidu experienced difficulty in controlling his right arm and leg, as well as speech impediments.
Given these circumstances, it’s only natural to wonder to what extent Huidu had recovered and whether or not he was allowed to drive. Jurnalul National quotes Lucian Dinita, director of the Romanian Traffic Police, as saying that 420 driver’s licenses were revoked over the first nine months of this year on account of medical disorders. Also quoted by Adevarul, Dinita said that Huidu had previously received 11 traffic fines, for speeding, illegal overtaking, as well as running a red light.
“The need for adrenalin ruined Huidu” the newspaper writes, adding explanations by traffic psychology experts. They believe that “when someone buys a powerful vehicle, they only take into account their own well-being and disregard that of others”. . Professor Corneliu Havarneanu says that ““most cases of aggressive driving occur as a result of the driver’s personality”. .
