“American basketball player killed in Giurgiu” headlines the Bucharest newspaper Adevarul, reporting on the unfortunate events that occurred on Saturday night in the Danube city in southern Romania. 23-year-old Hardy Chauncey, playing for the local basketball team, was celebrating victory against a rival team at the local pub.

After a verbal dispute, a local man punched Chauncey in the head. The player fell and hit his head against the concrete floor and entered in a coma. He was rushed to hospital in Bucharest, but died on Sunday night, despite the doctors’ efforts. The events were described by the main suspect himself, who turned himself over to the police and admitted his guilt. He is accused of assault on good morals and battery resulting in death.

The press in Bucharest was quick to make a disturbing parallel to the case of Marian Cozma, the Romanian handballer killed two years ago in the Hungarian city of Veszprem Cozma was also a player for the local club and died following a bar fight. “Copycat killing” is the headline of the daily Gazeta Sporturilor, which notes a difference in the fact that the American player’s death has reached international attention.

In turn, ProSport writes “The world of sports is once again struck by tragedy, reminding us of the Marian Cozma case”. According to the sports daily, the story is still inconclusive. The reason behind the dispute is unknown, given that the player did not speak Romanian, and it still hasn’t been explained why his team-mates didn’t react.

Early police findings show that the assailant was not part of a clan and acted alone, without accomplices. This is the detail that sets the two cases apart. The young Romanian handballer Marian Cozma was the victim of a criminal gang, notorious in that region. He died from being stabbed in the heart.

The trial was only concluded this year, with the assailants receiving heavy convictions, two of them being sentenced to life imprisonment. Violence is the common factor in the two killings. The American Embassy in Bucharest was quick to condemn the deed. Chauncey’s conational teammate Levar Seals said he was shocked, adding that he was himself the victim of a similar incident fuelled by racism.
