ROMANIANS AND THE CONFLICT IN THE GAZA STRIP 06/01/2009 |

The international community is striving to resolve the situation in the Gaza Strip, which is getting worse by the day. Romania is backing these efforts, given its good ties with both parties involved in the conflict and the fact that hundreds of Romanian citizens, mostly women and children, reside in the area.
Just like the other civilians in the area, the Romanian nationals are now being faced with a lack of food supplies, drinking water and medicines. Romanian Foreign Minister Cristian Diaconescu has met over the past few days with representatives of Israel and the Palestinian Authority in Romania to assess the situation. He has voiced Bucharest’s strong concern over the situation in Gaza and has stated that the solution to the Israeli-Palestinian crisis should be a political one, impossible to implement though unless violence ends.
Romania has repeatedly called for a cease-fire in the region, that should allow the access of humanitarian aid to the conflict area and the protection of civilians. Diaconescu has reassessed Romania’s availability to take steps jointly with the EU and through bilateral actions, with a view to finding a political-diplomatic solution to the crisis. At the same time, Bucharest is making great efforts to support the Romanians in Gaza who want to leave the conflict area. Several tens of Romanians have received Israeli authorities’ approval to leave the area.
The Romanian Foreign Ministry has announced it took all necessary measures to help Romanians leave but the fact that many of them did not have updated documents made things more difficult. The Romanian Embassy in Tel Aviv has been keeping in touch with the Romanian citizens in the area, in order to facilitate evacuation in keeping with the latest developments.
On December 27th, 2008, the Israeli air force initiated the first stage of a large scale operation against Hamas. The goal was to put an end to the almost daily rocket attacks against Israel launched by the insurgents of this radical Palestinian group , who had taken control of Gaza in June 2007. After a week of air raids, on January 3rd the Israeli army started the next stage, a ground offensive supported both by air and sea forces. All efforts, Romania’s included, are now focused on putting an end to the escalating violence in the Gaza Strip, in order to provide humanitarian relief in the conflict area.
