Almost 20 years since the fall of the communist regime, Romania is one of the democratic states which contribute to the promotion and safeguarding of human rights at a global level. On December 10th, when 60 years were marked since the passing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Romanian Foreign Ministry made public a communiqué which shows that in Romania, progress in the field of human rights is evident and internationally acknowledged. Proof thereof are the praising words in the report on Romania which was drafted as part of the process of the UN periodical assessment of human rights observance across the world. Many debates were held in Bucharest on various human rights- related issues such as protection of minorities and fighting discrimination against them.

Also an information campaign entitled “Pay it forward!” was launched on the Development Objectives of the Millennium that will run until February in Bucharest and 4 other cities - Iasi, Constanta, Cluj and Timisoara. Mentioned in the Millennium Declaration, adopted in September 2000 by over 190 countries, Romania included, these objectives refer to containing poverty, increasing the graduation rate in the compulsory education system, promoting gender equality and women’s affirmation. Other targets included in the declaration are: curbing child mortality, improving mothers’ health, fighting HIV and tuberculosis, ensuring a sustainable environment as well as developing communications and information societies. The campaign, which was allotted 100 thousand dollars in a first stage, consists of various actions: distribution of informative materials, an exhibition aimed at illustrating the 8 objectives of the millennium, debates in high schools and faculties.
