WINTER HOLIDAYS IN BUCHAREST 08/12/2008

Winter holidays have been given the start in Bucharest. In the middle of thousands of Bucharesters, most of them children, the city’s Mayor Sorin Oprescu on Saturday night lit thousands of little bulbs on Bucharest’s boulevards.

Thousands of torches, confetti, colored balloons and impressive fireworks in Bucharest’s central park contributed to the feisty atmosphere, set to accompany Bucharest city-dwellers into the new year. From the University Square, close to kilometer zero, winter holiday parties will be presided over by a multicolor, metal-made, 17-meter tall fir-tree. In five other places elsewhere in Bucharest natural fir-trees were adorned in red and gold.

The capital’s city center has become part of children’s fairy-tale world, and has now been turned into "a city of Santa Claus”. Here the little ones can see midgets, fairies or can have a ride in a sleigh drawn by reindeers. Grown-ups also have their share as specialized fairs were organized, following the Viennese model. 250 wooden shacks guard the boulevard in front of the Parliament House on either side, petty merchants invite visitors to taste their mulled wine, tea, sweets, traditional products, but also to buy winter holiday gifts.

Usually such events are organized under the slogan : ”Winter spree is at its best, so enjoy your Bucharest!” also including concerts given by children, or theater shows. Renowned and very popular artists will also perform for Bucharesters, and interactive puppet-shows will be organized for the little ones.

It is also the time when Bucharest has opened its six skating rinks and a ski slope. In figures, all these efforts to enliven the Christmas Spirit mean 1,300,000 Euro splashed out. Of this money, the mayor promised Bucharesters he would organize “a dazzling show of light and fireworks of European standing on New Year’s Night. Sorin Oprescu has also mentioned something about the surprises he has up his sleeve for the New Year’s Party; he refused to disclose anything whatsoever.

And as Oprescu has set for himself the task of bringing Bucharest into the Book of World Records, he also found sponsors to finance the making of the longest sausage in the world, but also the biggest cake. Another unusual initiative would be to have no less than 4,000 Santa Clauses roaming the streets of Bucharest starting December 21st. They will give children sweets and toys .
