The president of the Italian Republic Giorgio Napolitano met his Romanian counterpart Traian Basescu in Bucharest during an official state visit to Romania. Current international, European and bilateral issues were high on the two presidents’ agenda. One of the main topics was the situation of the Romanian community in Italy. President Traian Basescu thanked his Italian counterpart for the way in which the Italian authorities are handling the problem of the Romanian immigrants and also for the recognition of the Romanian Orthodox Church in Italy.
Traian Basescu: “I am grateful for the way in which the government and local administration in Italy are trying to solve the problem of Romanian immigrants. I thank you very much for recognising the Romanian Orthodox Church as a functional church on the territory of Italy.”
President Giorgio Napolitano gave assurances that the Italian authorities are not considering any restrictions against Romanian workers, but pointed out that in times of crisis there are less jobs available, including for immigrants. Giorgio Napolitano: “An economy that does not grow enough offers less employment opportunities, including for immigrants, and this is a situation everybody understands. However, we do not envisage any restrictive measures with regard to Romanian workers. So, I would like to repeat that there is nothing that may look, not even remotely, as a restrictive measure against Romanian workers who are already working legally in Italy.”
The Italian official said he was content that in spite of some xenophobic tendencies, the Romanian community in Italy is consolidating, as a result of the respect for the traditions of the Romanians living in this country, including their religious beliefs and practices. Napolitano, who said he came to Romania to capitalise on the exceptional relationship between the two countries, recalled that there are over one million Romanians working in Italy and contributing to the development of the Italian economy.
The two presidents also tackled European issues, agreeing on the need for a more intense integration process and sharing common views on the creation of the so-called “United States of Europe”. President Napolitano said that Italy supports Romania’s wish to join the Schengen area. The two presidents also discussed the problems related to the future EU budget year, with Traian Basescu underlining Romania’s priorities with regard to a continued provision of funds for development.
