The parliament in Bucharest has resumed its regular schedule

The Romanian Parliament has resumed its second session of the year, Constitutional reform, the election law and the administrative reorganization of the country being its main tasks until December. This session is expected to be heated, given that 2012 is an election year, and the government is expected to amend some laws which would merge counties and elections.

On the list of priorities for the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, is also amending the legislation on local elected officials, the Social Code, the Law on the enactment of the Criminal Code and the Referendum Law. The Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians in Romania, a partner of the Liberal Democrats in the ruling coalition, lay emphasis on economic recovery measures. Social Liberal opposition representatives have set among their priorities reducing the size of Parliament membership, banning political migration between parties and a more austere election campaign.

The Ministry of Education has announced the final results of the autumn session of the Baccalaureate.

Slightly more than 16% of students who took the autumn session of the baccalaureate exam passed it, after only 46% of them had passed the summer session. Most students in the autumn session got grades between 6 and 7 out of 10, none getting the highest grade. Over 400 students were kicked out of the exam for cheating. This year’s results are the worst in 20 years. The people who did not pass can continue their education by enrolling in a vocational school. The Ministry of Education has pointed out that enrolling in university without a baccalaureate diploma is illegal, and that universities who do that will be withdrawn their certifications.

Romania has announced it is able to live up to the commitments it made to secure borders in order to join the Schengen area.

Romanian Minister of the Interior Traian Igas said he was confident that Romania would be able to make it into the Schengen area, which was initially scheduled for March 2011. He pointed out that all evaluation reports clearly showed that Romania complied with all accession criteria.

Igas admitted, however, that the decision, expected to be made at the meeting of European Interior Ministers due on September 22nd and 23rd, would be a political one. According to him, Bucharest has time until then to convince the countries still reticent to Romania’s Schengen accession. Traian Igas:

“I believe we have enough time to tell those who have reservations that Romania has complied with all its commitments towards the EU and Schengen countries, to assure them once again that we are able secure the EU’s outer borders. I am talking about the borders with Serbia, the Ukraine and Moldova”.

In the UK and Holland, Justice Minister Catalin Predoiu spelled out Bucharest’s efforts to reform the justice system and to fight corruption. He insisted that the files of the Mechanism for Cooperation and Verification and joining the Schengen area be tackled separately.

10 years have passed since the attacks of September 11th .

All across the world, the victims of the September 11 attacks ten years ago are being commemorated. US ambassador to Bucharest Mark Gitenstein emphasized the fact that Romania has stood by America after the attacks, proving itself an effective ally in the fight against violent extremism and terrorism. He said his country would not forget the casualties and sacrifices of its allies. He reiterated the commitment made by the US to defend its friends against all common threats and support them in NATO operations all across the world. He also pointed out that the US would stand by Europe in the struggle against the growing threat of short and medium range missiles, which is why the US and Romania are working together to deploy elements of the anti-missile defense system in Deveselu in Romania”.
