The Decade that Changed the World |

The most atrocious terrorist attacks in world history claimed nearly 3000 lives. It was to be however a fleeting victory for a primitive and barbaric ideology. The unrelenting commitment to shared values and solidarity helped the United States and their allies ultimately prevail over terrorist threats.
The perpetrators of the 9/11 attacks wanted to strike terror into the heart of Americans. America however emerged more powerful a nation following those dark days, and its enemies are now weak, US president Barack Obama has recently said. The idea was shared by US ambassador to Bucharest Mark Gitenstein, who attended a public debate held at the Romanian Diplomatic Institute marking 10 years since the September 11 attacks.
Ambassador Gitenstein highlighted that ten years ago the allies had to stand the test of solidarity and strength. NATO confirmed its resourcefulness by invoking article 5 of the NATO Charter, whereby the allies pledge to protect the other member states. As the US diplomat said, the UK and Spain subsequently discovered the hardy way the surge of violence of the terrorist threat, although to a lesser extent than in the US.
The US official added that the US would abide by its commitment to defend its partners, and that the anti-missile shield to be built in Europe, part of which on Romanian territory, played an important role in this respect. Ambassador Gitenstein said America would not forget the losses and sacrifices of its allies, while reinforcing its commitment to defending its friends against all new global threats.
The US will support its allies as part of NATO operations conducted worldwide and will stand by EU states to face the growing threat posed by short- and medium-range ballistic missile. That is why, the US and Romania will jointly see the deployment of interceptors of the anti-missile shield near the village of Deveselu, ambassador Gitenstein went on to say.
The US official also praised Romania’s active role within the anti-terrorist alliance and the efficient Romanian military participation in the ongoing campaigns in Afghanistan and Irak. Radu Carp, the head of the Romanian Diplomatic Institute believes Romania’s involvement in the war on terror has been commendable.
“Romania has spearheaded the fight against terrorism ever since the question of defining terrorism was raised within international organizations, even before terrorism had become a fully-fledged global phenomenon. Of course, Romania was less affected than other countries, but it was actively engaged in the anti-terrorist fight. I would say Romania played an active role wherever terrorist threats existed and continue to exist”.
The appeal of extremist ideologies seems to be on the wane, as radicalism is no longer the number one political concern in the Middle East. Proof of that is the wave of revolutionary protests that swept the Arab world known as the “Arab spring”, of which we have yet to see an end. Ambassador Mark Gitenstein regards those events as the triumph of civil society over extremism.
