The 15th “Gaudeamus” International Education and Book Fair was a success for both the Romanian Radio Broadcasting Corporation, the organiser of the event, and the 400 Romanian and foreign publishers. Figures speak for themselves: more than 100,000 visitors and hundreds of thousands of books sold out in only 5 days. The success is truly important at a time when everybody speaks of a double crisis, of book reading and distribution, not to mention the international financial and economic crisis. Fortunately, the international financial crisis hasn’t impacted the Romanian book industry yet, in spite of gloomy forecasts. Vladimir Epstein the Director General of the “Gaudeamus” Fair:

”It is beyond any doubt that we all, exhibitors, publishers, education institutions and writers alike, have managed to overcome the crisis.”

Rodica Binder, editor with the Deutsche Welle radio station and a member of the Writers’ Union, also believes in the power that books have to survive, to leave an imprint on people at times of crisis, to remain valuable landmarks, as has very often happened in the history of culture:

”Every crisis creates opportunities and gives people a chance. I think the economic crisis we are faced with and which is the subject of heated debates in Western Europe also marks a return to old values; one of these values that are extremely important to our structure is, as we all know, reading. As media partners, we have been very happy with the organisation of the book fair and the Romanians’ enthusiasm. I was also happy to see that special emphasis is laid on quality: quality of culture, quality of books, quality of reading.”

Rodica Binder also noted that highly interesting debates for both writers and common people were included for the first time on the agenda of the fair, among 130 other events. Rodica Binder:

”We were happy to take part in a debate on communism and its being turned into fiction. I would dare say the fair gained importance, as compared to previous editions. I noted an enhanced quality of the fair. Seminars, a debate devoted to writers, “Security and Censorship” and many other events held as part of the “European Year of Intercultural Dialogue” were some of the highlights of the festival.”
