The Baccalaureate Exam in Romania

Bacalaureat Romanian politicians were quick to react to the shameful results obtained by students at the autumn session of the baccalaureate exam. The very low number of students who managed to pass the exam rekindled debates on the reform of the education system.

The disastrous results of the baccalaureate exam in Romania in 2011, the worst ever reported since the fall of the communist regime in 1989, have, not surprisingly, turned into a hot topic for domestic political debate. Deplored by students, parents and teachers alike, the baccalaureate results were given political spin by both the ruling coalition and the opposition.

The Liberal leader Crin Antonescu, in opposition, a fervent critic of the education minister, Daniel Funeriu, says the poor results obtained in the baccalaureate exam prove, once again, that the Romanian education system is implacably heading for disaster.

Antonescu, a co-leader of the Social Liberal Union, a group that brings together three opposition parliamentary parties, the Social Democratic Party, the Liberal Party and the Conservative Party, believes the education system managed by Funeriu in the past two years has come to a deadlock. In a very aggressive tone, Antonescu mocked minister Funeriu by saying that he sacrificed 100,000 students just to prove that the Romanian education system is a failure.

Prime Minister Emil Boc has come to the rescue of the education minister saying minister Funeriu is not guilty for the poor results of the baccalaureate exam. He said the minister should not be dismissed but, on the contrary, supported, given that he had the courage to present to Romanians the real situation in Romania’s education system.

Prime Minister Boc also added that this year’s baccalaureate exam was an X-ray of Romanian society and the situation that has been thus revealed could be overcome only through hard work and responsibility on the part of both students and teachers. In turn, minister Funeriu said that the whole nation should assume responsibility for the poor results in the baccalaureate exam.

Only 16% of the young people who registered for the autumn session of the baccalaureate exam managed to pass it as compared to 46% in the summer session. Many have blamed the exaggerated measures against cheating and the difficulty of exam subjects for the disastrous results in the baccalaureate exam.

The low number of high school graduates has put huge pressure on Romanian universities and in particular the private universities, which even halved their fees to attract more students.
