Romanian-Moldovan Bilateral Relations |
(2011-09-02) |
Last updated: 2011-09-05 13:50 EET |
The Romanian and Moldovan foreign ministers, Teodor Baconschi and Iurie Leanca, expressed their satisfaction over the normalization of relations between their states. The two officials met in Bucharest on Thursday to review bilateral relations between Romania and the Republic of Moldova.
The pro-Western ruling government coalition that replaced the pro-Russian communist rule nearly two years ago has brought about more than a new government for the Republic of Moldova. The program of reforms fostered by the new coalition is aimed at deeply changing the country’s foreign policy and society in general. The Romanian Foreign Minister, Teodor Baconschi, on Thursday said the Republic of Moldova picked up a rapid pace towards Europenisation, especially with the help of Romania”.
The Romanian official went on to say that Romanian-Moldovan bilateral relations resumed their normal course and that the political, administrative and civil elites of the two countries agreed upon the two countries’ common future within the European Union. European values, Baconschi argued, should be the foundation for a solid relationship which should not undergo further artificial and painful deterioration, which happened during the long communist rule between 2001 and 2009.
During that period, the strong anti-Romanian sentiment served both as diplomatic strategy and as domestic administrative policies. Using Soviet slogans about the so-called Romanian expansionism, the communists led by the former Moldovan president, Vladimir Voronin, froze Moldova’s relations with Romania. The accusations concerning Romania’s alleged involvement in an abortive coup, the closing of the Romanian-Moldovan border, the eviction of journalists and the declaration of the Romanian ambassador to Moldova a persona non-grata were the highlights of Voronin’s final days in office.
An EU-aspiring state, Moldova has Romania as its staunchest and most devoted supporter. The Moldovan Foreign Minister, Iurie Leanca, expressed his gratitude for Romania’s supporting the EU accession efforts of the Republic of Moldova, as well as for the 5000 scholarships granted to Moldovan students this autumn. A special guest at the traditional meeting of Romanian diplomacy held in Bucharest, Iurie Leanca said that the Moldovan government hoped to work out a clear-cut European perspective for the Republic of Moldova.
The Moldovan official recalled that, with Romania’s help, the Republic of Moldova was making progress in the negotiations on its EU accession and the liberalization of the EU’s visa regime for Moldovan citizens, which they hope to complete by the end of 2012. Leanca added that Moldova’s hopes were also tied to the disbursement of additional EU funds via the Eastern Partnership launched by the EU to the benefit of ex-Soviet states at its borders.
