The “George Enescu” International Music Festival has undoubtedly become an outstanding classical music event, thanks to the prominent musicians who have performed on its stage along the years. Some of these musicians are at their first participation in the festival, whereas for others it’s become a tradition of stepping onto the stage of the festival and receive standing ovations from an ecstatic audience.
The most important classical music event in Romania, the “George Enescu” International Festival has started off in Romania. Founded in 1958, upon the initiative of conductor George Georgescu, to celebrate the genius of his friend, the great violinist, pianist, composer and professor George Enescu, the festival introduces Romania into the international circuit of classical music festivals, through a spectacular series of top-notch concerts of undisputable quality. Until September the 25th, music lovers from Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Sibiu and Timisoara will be spoiled with exquisite shows, concerts and recitals given by famous musicians from all over the world.
This jubilee edition however will rely more on technological media progress, allowing all those interested in classical music to watch the main events of the festival on line, in real time. Just like the previous editions, the festival has been structured on several categories: “Big World Orchestras” “Chamber Orchestras and Recitals”, “Midnight Concerts”, “Ballet and Opera Shows”, “Music of the 21st Century”, “Enescu and His Contemporaries” and “World Music”, this last category has been introduced for the first time in the Festival’s agenda. Also during the event, the Festival Square, in front of the Romanian Athenaeum in Bucharest, will be hosting concerts and performances given by students from music schools around Romania.
Famous artists belonging to various chamber orchestras are also expected to step on this stage in the Festival Square. Visitors are also offered the possibility of watching an art exhibition put up by alumni of the Romanian Art University under the title of “Ebienale”. Held concurrently with the festival, the George Enescu International Contest has this year been structured on several sections, such as piano, violin, cello and composition. Juries of the four categories are made by musicians of world repute, from such countries as Japan, Germany, France, the UK, the United States, Russia, Sweden, Finland, Spain, Poland, Korea and Romania.
Considered a genuine springboard for young talents, the contest was initiated by Enescu himself while he was studying in Paris with a view to motivating young Romanian composers. This festival is expected to bring together famous world musicians, such as pianists Dan Grigore, Yundi, Saleem Abboud Ashkar, Christian Zacharias, Murray Perahia, conductors Christian Badea, Zubin Mehta, Valery Gergiev, Lawrence Foster, Cristian Mandeal, violinists Isabelle Faust, Alexandru Tomescu, Patricia Kopatchinkaja, as well as the Austrian Baroque Company, El Ballet Nacional Chileno, Ensemble Orchestral de Paris, Hungarian National Philharmonic, Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, the George Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra and Orchestre National de France.
