After half of the 2010 class failed the baccalaureate summer session, many students begin the second session that will run through September 2nd. Their number is close to 110,000, after less than 46% of the 205,000 got a passing grade. The first tests will verify linguistic knowledge, followed by the IT skills test, while next week will see the Romanian language and literature test, the native language and literature test and the compulsory specialization test.
Education minister Daniel Funeriu claims the exam will by no means be less difficult than in June: The questions will be as difficult as the ones in the first session. Grading will be fair. We are certain that those who have studied properly will pass the exam, while those who have not done it, will fail.
Back in June, no student was able to pass the exam in almost 30 schools across the country, and almost 900 students were eliminated for fraud. Minister Daniel Funeriu now says that the Education Ministry will maintain its zero-tolerance policy regarding fraud attempts: The exam must first of all be fair, and after people get used to this, then we can actually think of achievements.
Beside requirement standards, the expanded video surveillance system will remain in place. Those who enter an exam room carrying textbooks, dictionaries, notes, cell phones or any other electronic communication devices, whether they use them or not, risk being eliminated and will not be able to stand exams during the next two sessions. The head of the Romanian mathematics society, Radu Gologan, as quoted by Adevarul daily, believes that a mere 10% of the students who failed in June will pass the current exam, due to the short preparation time.
Ciprian Ciucu, an expert of the Romanian Center for European Policies, is equally pessimistic. He believes some of the students who have taken private classes will get a slightly better score, but overall their training will not have been satisfactory. Irrespective of results, 2011 is the year of negative records in the education sector in Romania the lowest pass rate in the first session, the highest number of students eliminated for fraud and of students enlisted for the second session.
