This week’s epic duel between French and Romanian football teams ended in painful defeats for both sides from Romania. In the two matches played on Tuesday and Wednesday, our local teams showed that we needn’t be too optimistic about Romanian performances in the Champions League, and that the group stage is just about as far as we can get for the time being. On Tuesday, CFR Cluj were outplayed at home by Girondins de Bordeaux, with the final score two to one for the French side.
The guests opened the scoreline in the 6th minute, through the effort of Yoann Gourcuff. It only took the CFR forward 3 minutes to score an equalizer and bring his team back into the game. 7 minutes from half-time, the away side scored again, as Brazilian Wendel turned his free kick opportunity into a goal, and the final scoreline was set. In the other game in CFR’s group, AS Roma secured a notable three-one victory at home against Chelsea London. Nevertheless, the British side continues to remain on top of the group table, with 7 points, followed by AS Roma and Bordeaux with 6 points each.
CFR are currently in fourth and last place, with 4 points. Next round will be played on November the 26th, when CFR will receive a visit from Italian side AS Roma. A victory in the next round is vital for CFR to still have a hope of qualifying for the European spring, either in the Champions League eighths, or in the UEFA Cup’s sixteenths.
The other Romanian team currently playing in the UEFA Champions League, Steaua Bucharest, are on a current streak of nine matches in a row without a victory. Steaua played away from home, and lost to French side Olympique Lyon, with the final scoreline two-nil for the home side. Both goals came at the most emotional moments possible - one minute from half-time, from Juninho’s far out free kick, and one minute from full-time, through the notable effort of Anthony Reveillere.
Steaua’s defense proved to be in better shape than in the previous match against Lyon, when the French side found the back of the net no less than five times. With Lyon’s Juninho and Benzema showing top form during Wednesday’s match, Steaua players could only find their way out of their half of the pitch about four times - twice through efforts towards the adversaries’ goal, and twice to go to the dressing rooms, at half-time and full-time. Nevertheless, Steaua’s game showed notable progress in the defensive sector, no doubt the work of their new coach Dorinel Munteanu. In the other game held on Wednesday in Group F, Fiorentina received a visit from Bayern Munich. The match ended in a one-all draw. Romanian star footballer Adrian Mutu scored the home side’s only goal.
In the 78th minute, Bayern’s Tim Borovski brought his side back into the game with a much wanted equalizer. Steaua is left in last place within their group, with only one point earned in four matches. Bayern and Lyon are on top of the group table, with 8 points each, and have almost no chances of qualifying for the next round. Italian side Fiorentina come in third, with two points ahead of Steaua, leaving room for a battle for third place, which leads to qualification in the UEFA Cup.
