Romanian Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu and his Hungarian counterpart Ferencs Gyurcsany believe that relations between Romania and Hungary have strengthened, and the cooperation between the governments of the two countries keeps improving. The two Prime Ministers met on Tuesday in the Hungarian city of Szeged, in the fourth official meeting of the two governments. They signed a number of agreements, the most important of which regarded measures to tackle trafficking and cross-border crime, the implementation of the common “112” emergency telephone number, and the mutual recognition of diplomas without additional exams.
The Romanian and Hungarian Ministries of Defense will also work together through the NATO Centres of Excellence to be established in both countries. During the meeting, special attention was given to the energy sector. Calin Popescu Tariceanu:
“A strategically important economic sector is that of energy resources. I would like to emphasise the need for coordination and solidarity between our two countries on this issue. Also, I appreciate our common efforts to complete the Nabucco gas pipeline project as quickly as possible.”
Nabucco is a planned gas pipeline which will run across Turkey and the Balkans into Austria, in order to reduce the dependence of European countries on natural gas imports from Russia. During the meeting in Szeged, the two officials also discussed the interconnection of natural gas pipelines running across the Romanian-Hungarian border, from Szeged to Arad. Another interesting discussion topic was that of the infrastructure. Calin Popescu Tariceanu
“Of course, our common interest is to link the two future Transylvanian motorways, which will run one through Oradea and one through Arad, to Hungarian motorways across the border. We also discussed the future expressway between Petea, Satu Mare and Baia Mare. Work is expected to commence in a few months.”
The Romanian Prime Minister also said he would like the express railway extended from Paris to Vienna and Budapest all the way to the city Constanta on the Romanian Black Sea Coast. As for tourism, the two countries would like to create a new tourism brand for the western part of Romania and the eastern part of Hungary.
